Is FCE hard? What makes B2 First challenging and how to cope
Is FCE hard? It is challenging if your English is below B2, but very manageable if you are at the right level and know the exam well. The parts students usually find hardest are Use of English, the longer Reading texts and timing in Writing. This page is part of our B2 First exam guide.

The short answer
B2 First is designed for one level: B2, upper-intermediate. If your English is around that level, the exam is a fair test of what you can already do. If your English is still at B1, it will feel hard, because the texts, recordings and tasks are pitched above you.
So the honest answer is: the exam is as hard as the gap between your English and B2. Your job in preparation is to close that gap and to learn the exam so well that nothing surprises you on the day.
There is also good news in the way the exam is scored. There is no minimum score per paper, and your grade comes from the average of your five scores. A weak skill does not mean you fail, as long as your other skills are strong enough. Read B2 First grades to see exactly how this works.
What students usually find hardest
Use of English Parts 2, 3 and 4 test grammar and vocabulary very precisely. One wrong preposition or a missing letter costs the mark. Key word transformations are often the part students fear most. The fix is regular, focused practice: see our guide to key word transformation.
Long reading texts Reading Parts 5, 6 and 7 use longer texts, and you must read quickly and carefully. Many students run out of time. Practising with a timer and learning when to skim and when to read closely makes a big difference.
Writing in the time Writing two well-organised texts of 140–190 words in 1 hour 20 minutes is a skill on its own. Students who don't plan often write too much, wander off topic or have no time to check.
Listening distractors In Listening, speakers often mention an option and then reject it or change their minds. Our page on FCE listening tips explains how to spot these traps.
Speaking nerves Some students know plenty of English but freeze in front of examiners. Practice with a partner, and a few go-to phrases, help a lot.
What is easier than students expect
- The format is predictable. Every exam follows the same structure, so you can learn exactly what to expect. Our FCE exam format page lists every part.
- You hear Listening recordings twice. You get a second chance on every question.
- The Speaking test is shared. You talk with a partner and the examiner guides the timing. You don't have to fill silence alone for long.
- You choose your Writing Part 2 task. You pick the task type you feel strongest in from three options.
- A sensible guess can still score. An empty answer never earns a mark, so there is no reason to leave a gap blank.
Five ways to make B2 First feel easier
- 1
Know your level honestly
Take a timed practice test and use the score calculator. It is much easier to prepare when you know your real starting point.
- 2
Learn every task type
Do at least one example of every part early in your preparation, so nothing feels new on the day.
- 3
Give your weakest skill extra time
Because the grade is an average, fixing a weak skill is often the fastest way to raise your overall score.
- 4
Practise under time pressure
Many problems in the exam are timing problems. Use a timer for most of your practice in the final weeks.
- 5
Follow a plan
A clear FCE study plan stops you wasting time and helps you see your progress.
Common traps
Trap: Deciding the exam is too hard after one bad practice test.
Fix: Practice tests vary. Look at your trend over several weeks before you decide anything.
Trap: Avoiding the parts you find hardest.
Fix: Those parts are where you have the most to gain. Give them short, regular practice.
Trap: Comparing yourself with friends.
Fix: Everyone starts from a different place. Compare yourself only with your own earlier results.
Frequently asked questions
Is FCE harder than PET?
Yes. B2 First targets B2 level, which is one level above B1, the level of B1 Preliminary (often called PET). The texts are longer, the language is more complex and the tasks expect more precise grammar and vocabulary.
Which part of FCE is the hardest?
It depends on the student, but Use of English (especially key word transformations) and the longer Reading texts are the parts students most often find difficult. Timing in Writing is another common problem.
Can I pass FCE with B1 English?
It is difficult. A B2 grade needs an overall score of 160, and the exam is designed for B2 level. If your English is at B1, you may receive a Level B1 certificate (140–159) instead. Building your English first gives you a better chance.
Is FCE hard for native-like speakers?
Strong speakers often find it manageable, but they can still lose marks by not knowing the format, writing too much or missing task details. Even strong candidates benefit from learning the exam.
How can I make the B2 First exam less stressful?
Know the format well, practise with a timer, have a plan for each paper and get plenty of rest before the exam. Our exam day tips page has a full checklist.
