Free FCE tools for B2 First preparation

Our free FCE tools help you practise and plan: a score calculator, a writing word counter, a study planner, a phrasal verb trainer and a word formation trainer. They are all free to use. The calculator and checker give estimates and simple counts, not official results or grades.

What these tools are for

Good preparation for B2 First is a mix of learning, practising and checking your progress. Our tools help with the parts that are easier with a bit of technology: turning practice-test marks into an estimated score, counting words while you write, organising your weeks, and reviewing vocabulary regularly.

Every tool on this page is free. None of them replaces a teacher, a real exam or official results. We explain honestly what each tool does and what it cannot do, so you can use it in the right way.

This is an independent site, not connected to Cambridge. For official results and information, always use Cambridge English and your exam centre.

FCE score calculator

The FCE score calculator turns your practice-test marks into an estimated Cambridge English Scale score for each of the five skills, an estimated overall score and the grade that score would give.

It uses the conversion points that Cambridge publishes for practice tests. Cambridge says these points should not be used to predict exact scores in the real exam, so treat the result as a guide to your progress, not a promise.

Use it when: you have finished a full practice test, or a practice paper for one skill, and want to see where you stand. Read B2 First grades to understand the result.

Writing word counter and checker

The FCE writing word counter counts the words and paragraphs in your text and highlights the linking words you have used. Each B2 First Writing task asks for 140–190 words, so it is useful to know where you are.

It does not grade your writing and does not check grammar, spelling or how well you answer the task. For that, use the FCE writing checklist and, if you can, ask a teacher.

Use it when: you have written a practice essay, article, email, letter, review or report and want a quick check of length, structure and linking.

FCE study planner

The FCE study planner helps you build a week-by-week plan up to your exam. It follows the same approach as our FCE study plan guide: a weekly routine that covers all four papers, regular practice tests and time for review.

Use it when: you have chosen an exam date, or you are deciding how much time you need. If you are not sure yet, read how long to prepare for FCE first.

Phrasal verb trainer

The FCE phrasal verbs practice trainer gives you short review sessions with phrasal verbs in example sentences. It uses spaced repetition: items you find difficult come back sooner, and items you know well come back less often.

Use it when: you have a few spare minutes. Short daily sessions work better than long ones. For explanations and lists, see our page on FCE phrasal verbs.

Word formation trainer

The FCE word formation exercises trainer helps you practise changing a base word into the form a sentence needs: noun, adjective, adverb or verb, positive or negative. This is the skill tested in Reading and Use of English Part 3. Like the phrasal verb trainer, it uses spaced repetition.

Use it when: you want to build your word families a little every day. For the strategy behind the exam task, read our guide to FCE word formation.

How to fit the tools into your week

  1. 1

    Start with a baseline

Do a practice test and enter your marks in the score calculator. Write down your two weakest skills.

  2. 2

    Make a plan

Use the study planner to organise your weeks, giving extra time to your weakest skills.

  3. 3

    Review vocabulary most days

Use the phrasal verb and word formation trainers for a few minutes on most days.

  4. 4

    Check every piece of writing

Paste each practice text into the writing checker before you review it with the checklist.

  5. 5

    Re-test every few weeks

Use the score calculator again and compare the trend, not single results.

Frequently asked questions

Are these FCE tools free?

Yes. All the tools on this page are free to use.

Is the score calculator result my official B2 First score?

No. It is an estimate based on Cambridge's published practice-test conversion points. Only Cambridge can give you an official result, after you take the real exam.

Does the writing checker mark my essay?

No. It counts words and paragraphs and highlights linking words. It does not give a grade or check grammar. Use our writing checklist or a teacher for feedback on quality.

Are these tools official Cambridge tools?

No. This is an independent site and our tools are not made or endorsed by Cambridge. They are study aids created by our team.

Which tool should I use first?

Start with the score calculator after a practice test. It shows your weakest skills, and then the study planner can help you build a plan around them.
