FCE key word transformation practice: six mixed-grammar items

This is a free FCE key word transformation practice set with six items covering common grammar patterns. It is part of our FCE practice collection. For the method, read our Part 4 key word transformation guide first.

Before you start

In Part 4 you complete a second sentence so that it means the same as the first, using a key word you must not change and two to five words in total. Many candidates find it works to spend about twelve minutes here, because the Reading and Use of English paper has one time limit for all seven parts, so it helps to know how long each part takes you.

  • Find the grammar point first: is it a passive, a wish, reported speech, a comparison?
  • Count your words. Contractions count as two words (didn't = did not).
  • Check that nothing from the first sentence is missing in your version.

After you finish

Compare your answer with every accepted variant, not just the first one. In the exam each item can give partial credit, so even a half-right answer is worth writing.

The same patterns come up again and again. If a phrasal verb caught you out, review our FCE phrasal verbs list. Then try a longer reading task such as the Part 5 practice text.

Questions about this practice set

How many marks is each transformation worth?

Each item is worth up to two marks, so a partly correct answer can still score one mark. Always write something.

Can I change the form of the key word?

No. The key word must appear exactly as it is given. If the key word is SUGGESTED, you can't write "suggest" or "suggestion".
