FCE Listening Part 4 practice: Recording the sounds of nature

This is a free FCE Listening Part 4 practice set: a longer interview followed by seven three-option questions. It is part of our FCE practice collection. Before you begin, read our Listening Part 4 guide for how to follow a long conversation.

Before you start

Read all seven questions first and underline the key words. The questions follow the order of the interview, and the interviewer's questions often signal which item you are on.

The interview is shown as text for now. Read it once, at a normal pace, as if you were hearing it, and answer each question as you reach that part. Don't go back.

  • Listen for the speaker's real opinion, not what other people think.
  • Watch for phrases like people assume or some people have suggested: they often introduce a wrong option.

Listening Part 4 practice 1: Recording the sounds of nature

Instructions: You will hear an interview with Daniel Reyes, who records the sounds of nature. For questions 1–7, choose the best answer (A, B or C). In the real exam you hear the recording twice.

Your browser can't play the computer voice. Read the transcript after checking your answers instead.

In the exam you hear it twice.
  1. 1. What first made Daniel interested in natural sounds?
  2. 2. What does Daniel find most challenging about his work?
  3. 3. Why does Daniel prefer to record early in the morning?
  4. 4. What concern does Daniel have about modern recording equipment?
  5. 5. How did Daniel feel about the popularity of his rain recording?
  6. 6. What does Daniel advise beginners to do?
  7. 7. What is the aim of Daniel's next project?

After you finish

Several questions in this set use the same trap: Daniel mentions what other people expect and then gives his own view. Spotting this pattern will help you in the exam.

To practise shorter extracts with the same kind of question, try the Part 1 practice set, and see all available sets on the FCE practice page.

Questions about this practice set

Is Part 4 always an interview?

Part 4 is usually an interview or a conversation between two or more speakers, and the questions follow the order of what you hear.

What should I do if I miss an answer?

Move on to the next question straight away. You will hear the recording again in the exam, so you can fill in any gaps the second time.
